South Korea has the highest number of plastic surgery clinics per capita in the world. In Gangnam district in Seoul, there are around 500 plastic surgery clinics in a single square mile, catering to both local and foreign medical tourists.
Cosmetic surgery is one of the hottest overseas medical procedures taking over Asia, with much of the popularity going to South Korea. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea, in 2018 alone, close to 380,000 foreign medical tourists from 190 countries visited South Korea to undergo plastic surgeries. This is a 17.8% increase from 2017.
Over the last 10 years, more than 2.26 million overseas travelers visited South Korea seeking cosmetic or beauty treatments. The cost of such procedures and in South Korea are significantly less than prices paid in the U.S., which are typically 1/3 of the price paid by Americans.
Patients from China, Japan, South East Asia, Russia, U.S. and Middle East are the majority of overseas medical tourists going to South Korea for plastic surgeries.
